Hey, Wait A Second! This Job Was Advertised As Remote, And Now It's Not?

Recruiting and hiring new employees is a serious undertaking. The process has built-in risks and uncertainties, so the current tug-of-war between employers and employees over remote vs. in-person work is an unwelcome new obstacle for recruiters and hiring managers to overcome.

 Enter the bait and switch. Employers know job seekers want remote or hybrid positions, so their job postings are composed in a way that makes candidates believe they are applying for roles that are 100% remote or 100% hybrid. There have been cases reported of employers misrepresenting the actual terms of the position to lure top talent into interviewing with the hope that, once in the room, candidates will make concessions to get the job.

Here’s a sample a scenario; say you live in eastern Pennsylvania and apply for a job for a company based in New York City that is advertised as a remote role. You make the two-and-a-half-hour trek into New York for an in-person interview. Then you enter a conference room and face a panel of four department directors – the interview goes perfectly until one of the directors implies the position is not as remote as advertised. Before you know what happened, 100% remote means 35% remote after a six-month trial period and supervisor approval, based on a host of performance metrics, none of which are your desire to work from home, or the beach, or the mountains, or wherever you can deliver the goods.

 What do you do? You are in the interview room or, in other scenarios, on a phone screen or Zoom call. Whatever the case, you are on the spot. 100% remote should mean 100% remote!

  • Be prepared for this situation to occur. If you know terms of employment, like remote vs. office, may change, determine your position in advance. If you give in-depth forethought to this specific issue, you can respond to relevant deal breakers with measured insight.

  • Before you blurt anything out, take a deep breath. Seriously, take a deep breath because you need to think things through. To resume our scenario, even if you are sitting in front of a panel of interviewers and you must think quickly, you need to think things through. Even if prepared, you need to think things through.

  • Think of it this way; you can’t blow the job offer because you don’t have one. Don’t panic. You’re in an interview, not reviewing a job offer. Whatever your response, the worst that can happen is the status quo. You did not work for this company when you woke up and you won’t work for it when you go to bed. Everybody moves on. Do not put extra pressure on yourself. You’re just talking.

  • Direct, polite, pointed questions are appropriate. Before you choose which path to take, be sure you understand the expectations. The promotion of the job as remote may have been a miscommunication (it happens), or something duplicitous, so ask for clarification. Ask them to explain the details of the remote aspect of the job. Make them give you an answer.

 

If the clarification is unsatisfactory, you have three options.

1.         Finish the interview and cut your losses. The path of least resistance is to finish the interview without pushing back on the “clarification” in employment terms, thank your interviewer(s), leave, and move on.

2.         Pull the plug and go home. To resume our scenario, you’ve driven from Pennsylvania to New York City for the interview with the expectation the next time you’d have to show your face is the holiday party. You have no intention of commuting or relocating. Like our hypothetical professional, if your circumstances are non-negotiable, in the interview, you can make it clear that you’re only interested in 100% remote work, thank your interviewer(s), leave, and move on.

3.         Pull the plug and go home, Part 2. Maybe your circumstances are flexible, and you’re not sure what you want to do. Now, you have to ask yourself, “How much do I want this job?” Do you want the job bad enough to remain in the interview and, if given, accept an offer that doesn’t include 100% remote work? Consider the pros and cons.

a.         Pros. Are there any pros? During the interview, did anything surface that changed your position on remote work? Is the compensation too high to pass up? Are there other benefits that tip the scale? As mentioned before, the strategy is to lure you in and dangle great shiny stuff in your face, so you make concessions. That doesn’t mean the great, shiny stuff isn’t, well… great shiny stuff! It is.

b.         Cons. Ethically, a company that isn’t honest with you before hiring you most likely won’t be honest with you after hiring you. You must decide, sometimes within moments, whether being trapped in an interview where you’re the least likely to protest a major change in work expectations is a glimpse into the overall corporate culture or just an aggressive recruiting method.

4.         Ask for more information. You decide you are seriously interested in the job and are open to sacrificing things like remote work to get it. Are you willing to give up all remote work? Or just 50%? Must it be part of the initial package, or can it be deferred to later in your employment? Decide your parameters. In the interview, reiterate your expectation was a remote position, but you want to hear more about the opportunity and decide based on the overall details.

Need To Get Better At Interviewing? Try A Mock Interview

In many ways, a job interview is a performance. Any actor will tell you doing scene work or watching themselves on film for the first time is a sobering experience. After that, it’s nothing but practice. Just like acting, interviewing is a learned skill. The better you become, the better your chances of receiving the job offers you truly want. 

Enter the Mock Interview. Think of a mock interview as a rehearsal – you run the lines but the stakes aren’t real. It does not matter how many mistakes you make because there are no real-world consequences beyond derision from the very generous and patient friend or family member who has agreed to interview you. Running lines with another person is a superior barometer of how prepared you are to face the room than writing out and practicing answers to potential interview questions. 

Before we dive into the nuts and bolts of a Mock Interview, let’s step back and think about your “sweet spot” in the room. The whole purpose of practice, practice, practice is

to make the experience as natural as possible. A contradiction? Yes. Tried, true, and effective? Yes. Going into an interview, you want: 

·      Your authentic self to shine.

·      Your answers to sound polished but not rehearsed.

·      To give sharp, succinct answers that match the question you were asked.

·      To avoid using space-filling interjections (e.g., um, ahem, aah, hmm, ah, like, etc.)

·      To make eye contact and have open body language. 

Mock interviews can:

·      Provide a fantastic method to hone your skills and sharpen your pencil.

·      Reveal whether or not you are effectively answering questions.

·      Make you more prepared, which makes you more comfortable, which mitigates anxiety and nervousness, which increases your vertical leap by three feet.

·      Provide a friendly and receptive audience comprised of a person, or people, who know you best and will, most likely, offer positive constructive criticism.

 

Start with a list of questions. Endless examples of interview questions are a Google search away but to jump-start your groundbreaking off-Broadway production of “Interview 101”, here is a quick list of classics: 

·      Tell me about yourself.

·      What interested you in this opportunity?

·      Why do you think you’re a good fit for this job?

·      Tell me about your experience in this type of work.

·      What is your greatest strength and weakness?

The first type of Mock Interview is like a play in an empty theater. It’s in person. Just like a real interview, you sit awkwardly across the table from someone who asks you questions typical of a job interview. There are no rules to conducting a Mock Interview, but for the best results keep the interview questions a secret for the first run-through. After that, you can hone your responses and demeanor. In this setting, your interviewer’s body language and reactions are instant feedback.

The second type of Mock Interview is a video. Yes, you’re sitting awkwardly across a table just like before, but this time a video camera is rolling. Warning: video is not kind. Watching yourself interview can be painful, because video reveals interview skill deficiencies with unnerving accuracy. You will see things invisible during your live one-on-one like fidgeting, posture, eye contact, blinking, excessive interactions, and sweating.

Practice. Practice. Practice. Rinse. Repeat.

Other tips – ignore at your own risk: 

·      Do a full dress (up!) rehearsal, including printing out your resume and stressing about where to park.

·      Many interviews are behavioral interviews. Knowledge is power. Learn as much about them as you can.

·      Don’t forget the other important set of interview questions – yours! Chances are, you’ve had an interview that ends with, “Do you have any questions?” Have questions. Great, well-researched, and well-thought-out questions. If you don’t ask your interviewers questions, you’ll come across as uninterested.

·      For recent graduates or soon-to-be-recent graduates – put down your phones! No. Seriously. Put down your phones. Take those earbuds out of your ears and L-I-S-T-E-N. Your college career center may have some great resources to help you prepare for interviews.

·      Thank your interviewer(s) for your time (yes, even the imaginary one during the mock interview!).

Should I Take a Lower Level Job If I'm Returning to Work After An Extended Leave?

 People leave the work force for many reasons, such as having children, performing military service, taking care of ill relatives, or to return to school on a full-time basis. Whatever the reason, when someone decides to return to the work force after an extended period – often measured in years – he or she will encounter additional obstacles unique to those with gaps in their work history [8 Job Search Strategies for Returning to Work After An Extended Gap].

If you were a Director four years ago, you may believe you should automatically return to the same level, or higher, and under certain circumstances, like earning an advanced degree, that may be an achievable goal. In other cases, however, it’s important to prepare for the possibility a return will be at a lower level and/or lower compensation.

Selling yourself and your value as a return presents its own set of challenges. For better or worse, it’s important for job seekers to understand the insider perspective of recruiters and hiring managers.

There’s the perception that you are “out of the loop”, and recruiters/hiring managers will ask, “Is this person’s skill set aligned with current standards and practices?”

It’s essential to consider the reality of the situation. Time off the job can translate into missed skills, and since the starting point is the perception that you are “behind” other candidates, employers will likely focus more on your current skill set and less on your past work experience and accomplishments. For example, if every job is “Salesforce experience preferred” and you don’t have any experience in that software, no amount of impressive metrics on your resume will lift you over that hurdle. Your resume probably won’t make it past the Applicant Tracking System.

And make no mistake – as the returner, your leverage can be weaker than someone who is and has been gainfully employed. After all, an employer may not feel compelled to shower a candidate with money to attract them if their alternative is continued unemployment. Candidates who have been laid off face this same challenge, and some companies may exploit that to their advantage. 

As you develop a strategy to return to the workforce, how can you cancel out negative perceptions and rise to the top of a company’s list of candidates? Here are some important factors to consider.

  • How long have you been out of the work force? If it’s been several years, rapid changes may have occurred. Laws change. Regulations change. Technologies change. Do the research. Study the job postings. Become an expert again.

  • Where are your technical skills today? You’ve done your research and mapped the current landscape. Now it’s a simple game of compare and contrast. Determine if, and in what areas, you have skill gaps and develop a plan to resolve them.

  • Ego. Your ego. Letting go of your past life, or salary, may not be easy, but your number one priority should be to position yourself to get back in the work force. By no means should you work for free, but understand that returning where you were or ahead of where you were when you left the job market may or may not be a feasible option. Focus on the future.

 

As you tackle the search as a returner, consider the following: 

  1. Remember that you have value. It is easy to fall into the trap of self-depreciation, and it will be on your face and in your voice during the interview process. Keep in mind that you would not even be in the game if you didn’t have desirable professional and personal qualities. Be your biggest fan!

  2. Understand where you can realistically re-enter the work force. Self-assessments are an essential tool and effective weapon. Do your homework! If you have clarity on this point, you will be more effective targeting the jobs you want the most.   3. Always be training. This mantra is critical to both the unemployed and employed alike. Continuing your professional development – whether working or not – is one of the best ways to bolster a lateral, or even upward, move back into the work force.

  4. Demonstrate positivity. Show your best and most professional self. Positivity is a “soft skill” that can make instant inroads with employers who believe you will be a good co-worker and collaborative team member.

  5. Your next job may not be your last. End up in a lousy job that underpays you? Consider it a springboard to a better opportunity. It’s not going to take long for you to rebuild your toolbox and enhance your marketability. When the time is right, move on to a company that will pay you what you’re worth.
